Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is one of the few premier - big 5 - game sanctuaries in South Africa and easily compares in wilderness size, game viewing and principles of conservation management to the likes of the Madikwe Game Reserve and The Greater Kruger National Park.
Welgevonden alone is over 35 000 hectares of prime - malaria
free - Waterberg game sanctuary and is home to an impressive variety of Fauna & Flora, immensely interesting cultural & geological history, spectacular Waterberg scenery, excellent game viewing and bird life in the
lush green of summer. Crystal clear streams have, over 2 billion years, carved the scenic topography of the Waterberg mountain wilderness we know today.
A pleasant 2.5-hour drive, or an easy 45-minute flight from Johannesburg into one of 2 airstrips makes Welgevonden the most accessible premier wilderness reserve in the country and it is MALARIA FREE!
Having worked on Welgevonden for over 6 years, the reserve and the people have found a very
special place in our hearts and we pride ourselves on an intimate knowledge of the reserve,
each lodge, its location and pricing.
The Waterberg Savannah Biosphere Reserve: During 1990 the Waterberg Nature Conservancy was established to conserve the more than 150 000 hectares of indigenous bushveld in the Limpopo (Northern
Province). The aim of establishing the conservancy was to maximize the area’s potential for conservation, sustainable development and social
upliftment. The region has become one of the major conservation and tourism areas in the country and was awarded International Biosphere status by UNESCO during 2001. It is the first savannah biosphere reserve to be recognized by UNESCO in Southern
Africa. This area is a unique paradise, which boasts “audible” silence, diverse bush and mountain scenery in unsurpassed wilderness – right on our doorstep!
The Waterberg, with its many privately owned game reserves, game lodges and commercial agricultural farms, has been a well-kept secret for a long time but is fast becoming the destination of preference for local and international guests.
The Waterberg Mountain Range, so called because of the many rivers, streams and fountains flowing from it, is the collective name for the Sand River Mountains, the Hoekberg, the Swaershoek Mountains and the Moepel Range.
